Another writtey title, but can't think of one at this minute, oh well, continuing of my Final Major Project Journal

This is continuation of the blog/journal so far with my forth write up so far. Oh by the way sorry for the delay folks.

1/01/11

Continuing developing the script since before Christmas.

Meanwhile looking at a few Tom and Jerry cartoons. Which I've looked at Tom character which is a cat of course. What I've found about Tom's characteristics which are quite noticeable such as he speaks or screams (videos below) like a human when he gets hurt. Also, when he walks like a human. The only qualities he has being a cat is hating mice and looking like a cat. Also what worked well in these cartoons was the score it worked well with the animation such as which mode the characters are in.

4/01/11

I have been reading up Basic animation: scriptwriting by Paul wells. I have looked at case study in the book called 'writing comedy: van Partible' (who van Partible was creator of the Johnny Bravo series) was talking about his creation Johnny Bravo (1997). He says making Johnnys characteristics is a pre-teen with a lot of testosterone that makes bad judgements trapped in an adult body, despite this having a heart of gold, making the character simpler to write (videos below).

This method should work well with my main character Donny by making him dumb (not as completely dumb character such as a Peter Griffin or Homer Simpson) whereas making Pete smarter than Donny. This will be simplistic to write the story overall.

Meanwhile still developing my script.

9/01/11

Finished off my script for the animation. Sending it off to a few people to get some feedback a few days time. In the meantime I am starting to draw down what the characters will possibly look like.

14/01/11

Starting to draw down some characters will be looking like. I have done early drawing what Donny will possible look like.

Also, I have doing some rough sketches on what Pete will possibly look like as well.

End of blog for now. Next blog soon. Bye.

Third blog of 2011 FMP animation (and no witty titles this week)

Third blog for FMP animation so far.

6/12/10

Written down a sketch for the animation about a Jerry Springer satire skit and about pop culture neutering (image below to read from my sketchbook).

7/12/10

Discussing procession with Will today. Discussed about the work I've written so far, he told me to make the characters stronger (at this moment the characters are weak) make the relationship stronger. That what I need to do make the characters stronger and continue with writing the story. He also said to me to watch 'Simon's Cat' to look at.

9/12/10

Looked at couple of epsidoes of' Simon's Cat'. First of all like the usage of black and white, worked quite well, if it was colourful would have been focus of the characters. I also liked the use there wasn't focusing on the background, they were concentrating on the characters.

11/12/10

When I was looking at 'Simon's Cat', I was thinking look at other human and cat relationship in cartoons. I looked at 'Top Cat', what I liked in these cartoons where the relationship of Top Cat and Officer Dibble, they were quite more human rather than Simon's Cat, which is more human/pet relationship. Also, I liked was the styling, it was quite simplistic with some of the characters such as Benny.

21/12/10

End of Blog. Next Blog soon. That's all. Bye.

Thursday 13 January 2011

Dear Hardcore diary (what a second I'm not Mick Foley), Second brand new blog of 2011

Right second blog of 2011. Don't worry its still an animation blog.

23/11/10

Today I have discussed ideas with Will today (wasn't here on the 16/11/10). Talked about all of my ideas so far. He advise not to drop 'the Ghost town of the future' idea yet, he said might be more achievable to do.

He also says to continue with the 'House of Donny', it needs to be more heavily dialogue, go and do some character design/testing. He said to me to look at researching script writing and lip-synching. Go and look at images for x-sheet or dope sheets. He also advise me to look at Clerks for research about good example of slacker comedy, smart through crude.

24/11/10

I have looked at some clips of Clerks such as this clip below, talking about Jedi Politics and talking about the Death Star in Return of the Jedi.

While, I also looking on Youtube I've found 'Clerks: The Animated Series', which they only done six episodes, But they continued with the same format of the film using films, and humour such as the start of the show were they use humour in the right time with the announcer at the start.

I like their style. I really like the use of the thick outlines on the character, using thinner black lines for details. While using very bland colours (not using any bright colours) suited quite well in the animation. And the videos below is the first episode of 'Clerks: The Animated Series'.

25/11/10

I have also looked at some early animation from Seth MacFarlane called 'The Life of Larry' and 'Larry & Steve' are two animation short films, that would eventually led to the development of Family guy. 'The Life of Larry' is short animation from Seth MacFarlane's student film he created at Uni. Meanwhile Larry & Steve' was created for Cartoon Network when he was working at Hanna-Barbera Productions, before he was started on Family Guy for 20th Century Fox.

What I really like in these animation is the styling, I liked this because, when you see his Family Guy, Cleveland Show and American dad styling is quite similar to each other. But in these two early animations they are quite different of the characters are much more detailed then his latter cartoons.

Another thing I quite like is the interaction between Larry and Steve. The student animation is quite different relationship, talking to each other in 'Life of Larry', while in 'Larry and Steve', Larry quite more of an idiot.

27/11/10

Today, I have looked at examples of dope sheets and x-sheets what Will tell me to looked at. First example I have looked at was The Fundamentals of Animation by Paul Wells. This had many examples of dope sheets. Another example I've looked at was on this link. This was another example of a dope sheet below I've looked at. Which helped me more on dope sheets does.

30/11/10

NA (not attended), due to snow.

03/12/10

Start to put ideas down onto paper, just putting a structure into the story will be, just putting every joke down, you can put down into approx three minutes (image below). I think it needs to be less jokes to work in my opinion, I might wait to Tuesday and ask Will about his opinions about it.
End of second blog, new blog soon, bye.

Start of Final Major Project Animation Journal/Blog, oh by the way sorry about the delay

Right sorry about the delay but...Hello, First blog of 2011. Start of my Final Major Project Animation.

This blog represents my actions for the pre-production and is backed up by the reasons I have used and the evidence present in my portfolio. It shows how I got to the stage of production. Based around 2 - 3 mins.

9/11/10

Starting on ideas for Final Major Project I'm doing. First idea called 'concept formula 1' is about building a concept car/formula 1 car such as Red Bull X1 prototype car in Gran Turismo 5 or Porsche 918 Spider. The Animation could be based around a Formula 1 car that is based in the next 20 years. Programmes possibly using is Maya 3D and After effects.

10/11/10

Second Idea is based on the idea of the Ricky Gervais Show. Were is my idea, is based on a podcast on iTunes called 'The Chels' presented by Phil Daniels. Talks about Chelsea F. C. in a funny way such as: Bobby Moore Middle name is Chelsea, they take the mickey about it to unknown West Ham fans who doesn't know this. The style is going to be in my own unique styling. Using programmes such as Flash.

11/11/10

Next idea is about 'a ghost town of the future', were the view of an old man eyes, were the town is almost disappeared. Were in the future the shops are empty . And a merger of Tesco and Asda in a monopoly of supermarkets. And people are stealing HDTVs. People are stealing money from other people. A bleak future. Styling will be more than likely be handrawn animation.

14/11/10

The idea is called 'House of Donny'. The idea is based around Donny who's a 22 year old student who's got a talking cat called Pete. Donny will tell stories about what happen today in Uni, were it is a bizarre day. Styling, from pervious projects a rough, edgy style. Programmes will be using, more than likely using Flash and After effects.

15/11/10

Next idea is around a long hair blond, brave, renegade character, who wants to fight crime and saves a girl from a monster. The Styling will be similar to Sin City. Programmes possibly based around in After Effects and Flash.

16/11/10

Today I have show my two strong ideas to my peers today (two strong ideas I choose was 'concept formula 1 car' and 'house of Donny') showed visual and early drawings to them.

My peers felt that the concept F1 car idea, would be a good idea, but they felt the narrative is weak, needs to be strong to continued with this idea. However, my peers felt 'House of Donny' is a strong idea compared to 'concept F1 car' because of the narrative is much strong. In my opinion I think the narrative needs to be deep on how to plan the idea in weeks to come.

End of first blog in 2011, Next blog soon, Bye.
